Notions

Cliché used as a writing prompt? Yes, thank you.
It’s not the use of the silver lining saying, but the way that it is turned into concrete form that I admire in this poem. Silver linings are turned into tangible strands, filaments, yarn, wire, braids, and the proverbial reminder string tied around a finger. Plus, there are some delicious phrases such as the alliterative “filament fixing us to friends.” All delivered with a message about gratitude in the present moment.

I’m not necessarily a fan of the silver lining mindset. I believe there is potential for learning and growth in most hardships, but the saying oversimplifies that idea and can imply that the person who is suffering is just not looking hard enough.
Practicing present moment gratitude, however, is a way that we might condition ourselves with resilience for when loss and tragedy occur. In that sense, the poem subtly comes full circle. It’s such a lovely and well executed poem.
Love,
M
